KU Leuven is offering a PhD position in the ADVISE research group, based at the Advise lab on Campus Geel within the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT). The project focuses on radiation-tolerant pixels for CMOS image sensors, addressing a key limitation in current image sensor technology: degradation of in-pixel charge transfer under ionizing radiation, which leads to increased read noise and image lag.
The successful candidate will work on developing new pixel concepts that can withstand more than 1 MGray TID while maintaining low read noise. The research combines device physics, microelectronic circuit design, and image sensor innovation. Initial work will involve TCAD simulation of pixel concepts at device level, followed by the design, prototyping, and laboratory characterization of radiation-hardened pixels.
The project is embedded in a large and active research environment at KU Leuven, with over 30 researchers working on microelectronics for harsh environments and machine learning. The work is supported by a postdoctoral researcher and the promotor, providing a collaborative setting for doctoral research. The group also has a strong track record in CMOS image sensors, led by Prof. Guy Meynants, a recognized expert with decades of experience in the field.
This is a PhD scholarship position with funding for 4 years and a very competitive monthly stipend. The appointment starts with a 1-year assignment and can be extended for 3 additional years after positive evaluation. Applicants should have a Master degree in Electrical/Electronic/Nanotechnology Engineering or an equivalent degree with distinction, together with knowledge of analog integrated circuits and semiconductor device physics.
