About this position
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is offering a full-time PhD scholarship in the Faculty of Sciences and Bioengineering Sciences, Department of Chemistry. The project focuses on the development of new allosteric ligands that bind to membrane-bound proteins and channels, with the goal of evaluating their therapeutic potential.
The doctoral research will involve the design and synthesis of bioactive, peptide-based ligands, including the preparation of customised amino acids where needed. The successful candidate will contribute to discussions on molecular design and optimisation, and will take part in the in vitro and in vivo evaluation of the synthesised compounds. The position also includes supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s students and working across two research groups.
The post is based at the Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) in Brussels, Belgium. The university emphasises free research, interdisciplinarity, and an open and diverse academic environment as part of its mission and its EUTOPIA network participation.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in science, biomedical sciences, or an equivalent degree. Non-EEA candidates must also meet permit and residence requirements.
The scholarship starts on 1 January 2027 and is initially awarded for 12 months, with the possibility of extension up to 48 months subject to positive PhD evaluation. Funding is provided through a government-linked grant scale.

Experience in supervising students, a dynamic and flexible approach, ability to work across two research groups, attention to detail and accuracy, and excellent oral and written presentation and communication skills are also requested. Non-EEA applicants must meet the conditions for obtaining a valid permit for VUB and comply with residence requirements. Applicants must not have performed assistant work paid from operating resources for more than 12 months in total.
