About this position

PhD Scholarship in AI for Forest Robotics at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) in Norway, in collaboration with NMBU in Ås. This is a three-year doctoral position focused on machine learning, deep learning, 3D point clouds, LiDAR, computer vision, robotics, and real-time inference for forest scene understanding, localisation, and navigation.

The project aims to make robots understand forests incrementally from partial sensor observations, using LiDAR scans and camera imagery to support traversability, place recognition, and self-localisation. The work includes developing new ML architectures, compact representations of forest structure, and systems that can run on embedded hardware and NIBIO robot platforms.

Applicants should have a completed master’s degree or equivalent five-year degree in data science, machine learning, robotics, or a related field, and must meet NMBU PhD admission requirements. Strong Python skills and experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow are required, along with good English and willingness to do outdoor field work in Norwegian forests. Helpful extras include C++, ROS/ROS2, SLAM, sensor fusion, embedded/real-time optimisation, and forestry or remote sensing experience.

The position is based at Ås, about 30 km south of Oslo, Norway. Salary is NOK 555,000–635,000 per year, with pension and insurance benefits. NIBIO also offers free Norwegian language training if needed to reach A2 level.

Apply electronically via the portal at https://www.resaver.eu/ by 18 October 2026. The vacancy notice also references the official NIBIO positions page and an Euraxess listing for full details.
