About this position
PhD Scholarship in China Studies at the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, University of Copenhagen (Denmark).
This three-year PhD scholarship is part of the larger project Global Cultural China: Danish–Chinese Cultural Encounters. The project examines how cultural products, practices, traditions, and ideas move across borders and are transformed through transnational flows, market forces, institutional frameworks, technological platforms, and local reception. It is embedded in the China Studies environment at the department and focuses on cultural encounters between China and Denmark, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, and diaspora communities.
Applicants are invited to propose an individual PhD project on themes such as the transnational production, circulation, and reception of Chinese art, traditional culture, or popular media; platform-mediated cultural phenomena; transnational translation, curation, and publishing; and the reception and adaptation of Danish cultural forms in the Sinophone world. Qualitative and mixed-methods approaches are welcome, including ethnographic, textual, historical, and digital methods.
Eligibility: applicants must have master’s-level qualifications in China Studies or a relevant humanities/social science discipline. Strong academic English is required, and candidates must also be able to work in Chinese and Danish; language documentation may be requested.
Funding: the position is funded as a PhD scholarship. Salary starts at approximately DKK 31,844 per month plus an 18.07% pension contribution, and the PhD Fellow will also perform departmental duties equivalent to 840 working hours over the three-year period.

Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to master’s level related to China Studies or relevant disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Applicants educated in Denmark must have a master’s degree covered by the collective agreement for academics in the state sector. Applicants educated outside Denmark must have either a master’s degree equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (two years) or at minimum a bachelor’s degree equivalent to a Danish bachelor’s degree (three years) and be assessed as having professional qualifications at master's level. Applicants must have high-level written and spoken academic English and must also be able to work in Chinese and Danish; the department may request documentation of language skills in Chinese, Danish, and English.
