About this position

European MSCA Doctoral Network PhD scholarship (DC12) at the University of Cyprus, hosted by the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence in Nicosia, Cyprus.

This opening is for one full-time PhD position within the MSCA Doctoral Network SPRING (2026–2030) (“Resilience experts in future large-scale critical infrastructures”). The project sits at the intersection of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Control Engineering, and Mathematics, with a strong focus on digital twins, critical infrastructure resilience, cyber-physical systems, formal methods, explainable AI, and human-centered decision support.

The selected candidate will be enrolled in either the Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering PhD programme at UCY and will work under the supervision of Prof. Mathaios Panteli and Prof. Demetrios Eliades. The research aims to advance scalable digital twin frameworks for interconnected critical infrastructures, including energy, water, and transportation systems, with topics such as anticipatory self-adaptation, automated diagnosis, real-time risk-aware response, knowledge engineering, simulation, and reusable intelligent software agents.

Funding: MSCA-funded scholarship with a competitive monthly salary, mobility allowance, possible family allowance, social and health insurance, and university tuition fees covered. The scholarship is offered for at least three years, subject to annual evaluation.

Eligibility highlights: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering, computer science, AI, or applied mathematics field; no doctoral degree yet; compliance with the MSCA mobility rule; excellent English; strong background in systems/control, modelling, simulation, and programming. Experience with machine learning, optimization, state estimation, verification, multi-agent systems, digital twins, or critical infrastructure modelling is advantageous.

What's required

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and/or Electronic/Computer/Control Engineering, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics or a related area. They must not already hold a doctoral degree and must satisfy the MSCA Doctoral Network mobility rule (not having resided or carried out their main activity in Cyprus for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment). A very good command of English is required, demonstrated by IGCSE at least C, IELTS Academic 6.5 minimum, or TOEFL 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, or 80 internet-based. Strong background in systems and control and/or cyber-physical systems, mathematical modelling, simulation, scientific programming, strong writing and communication skills, and ability to work independently and in an international team are expected. Experience in machine learning, optimization, state estimation, formal methods, verification, distributed/multi-agent systems, Digital Twins, critical infrastructure modelling, resilience, cyber-physical security, ontologies, domain-specific modelling languages, intelligent systems, distributed software architectures, publications, open-source contributions, or a research-oriented MSc thesis is an advantage.
