About this position
CQUniversity is offering a PhD scholarship in harmful algal bloom species in coastal waters of Central Queensland, based through the Coastal Marine Ecosystems Research Centre in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia.
The project focuses on marine ecology, microalgal species identification, molecular techniques, DNA-based analyses, toxin analysis, predictive modelling, and water quality assessment. The research aims to develop an integrated multi-scale monitoring framework for harmful algal blooms (HABs), including ciguatera and other HAB-related incidents, and to improve understanding of environmental drivers, ecological dynamics, and public health risks in central Queensland coastal waters.
The scholarship is linked to regional ecosystem health, coastal management, and stakeholder engagement with industry, Traditional Owners, and local communities. It also supports broader efforts related to marine ecosystem resilience and the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan.
Funding: AU$35,000 stipend per year for 3 years (AU$105,000 total). One scholarship is available.
Eligibility highlights: Applicants should have experience in HAB research, species identification, field collection, sample processing, and molecular methods. Strong skills in Primer or R (or similar statistical packages) are required. Snorkeling experience is essential; diving experience is desirable. The successful candidate must be willing to study full-time in the Gladstone region and undertake fieldwork along the central Queensland coastline.
How to apply: Send a CV, cover letter addressing the selection criteria, BSc and MSc transcripts, and two academic referees to Dr Angela Capper at [email protected]. Closing date for applications is 5 July 2026.
