About this position
University of Antwerp is advertising a full-time doctoral scholarship in mathematical modelling and optimal design of mechatronic systems within the Department of Electromechanical Engineering Technology and the research group Cosys-Lab.
The PhD project focuses on the next generation of automatic generation of mechanisms and the optimization of their performance. The successful candidate will prepare and defend a PhD thesis, develop a research plan with the supervisor(s), present at scientific conferences, publish in the scientific literature, and contribute to ongoing research projects. Some limited teaching and/or valorisation support tasks are also part of the role.
Eligibility highlights: a master's degree in mechanical engineering, mathematical engineering, physics, applied math, or a similar field (or completion by the appointment date); excellent academic results; a strong mathematical background; and clear interest in mathematical modelling and optimization applied to engineering problems. Experience with linear/geometric algebra or numerical optimization is valuable, and prior exposure to projective geometric algebra is a plus but not required. Strong English skills are expected, preferably C1.
Funding: the position is a doctoral scholarship, initially for at least one year and renewable up to a maximum of three years depending on evaluation and funding. The scholarship follows University of Antwerp rates and includes ecocheques plus commuting support (bicycle allowance or public transport reimbursement).
Location: most work will be carried out at Campus Groenenborger, Antwerp, Belgium.
Application deadline: 2 November 2026 (midnight Brussels time). Apply online via the University of Antwerp job portal and upload a motivation letter and academic CV. Questions about the application form can be sent to [email protected]; questions about the position can be directed to Professor Stijn Derammelaere.
