About this position

PhD Scholarship Opportunity in Prenatal Supplementation and Maternal-Child Health

This PhD scholarship is based at Flinders University and involves a collaboration with the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and industry partner Natural Factors Australia. The project focuses on optimising prenatal supplementation to improve pregnancy and child health outcomes, with research spanning nutrition, public health, epidemiology, clinical trials, and knowledge translation.

The successful candidate may contribute to a major national randomised controlled trial funded by the Women's & Children's Hospital Foundation, including work related to the FIG Study on folic acid supplementation during pregnancy and its longer-term effects on child health outcomes. The role also includes an industry placement with Natural Factors Australia, offering experience in product development and research translation.

Training will include clinical trial design and conduct, epidemiology and population health research, evidence synthesis and systematic review methods, and implementation science. Applicants with backgrounds in nutrition and dietetics, public health, epidemiology, health sciences, medicine, pharmacy, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Funding: The scholarship provides a tax-free stipend and top-up valued at $51,000 per year for up to 3.5 years, plus an RTP Fee Offset Scholarship to cover tuition fees for eligible Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens, and Australian permanent residents.

Eligibility: Applicants must meet Flinders University PhD admission requirements, including an Honours Class 1 or 2A (or equivalent AQF Level 8+ qualification) with a substantial research component and Distinction (75%) or higher, or equivalent research experience. The candidate should be able to work independently and collaboratively and have strong communication and interpersonal skills.

How to apply: Prospective applicants should first contact Professor Tim Green by email to discuss the project. Applications for admission and scholarship support are separate and must be submitted through the university application system.

Start date: The successful candidate is expected to commence between October 2026 and January 2027, no later than 31 January 2027.
