About this position

[Full tuition at Home rate (£5,238 for 2026/27) or International rate (£23,950 for 2026/27), plus a maintenance grant equivalent to the UKRI National Minimum Doctoral Stipend (£21,805 for 2026/27 with yearly uplift) for 3.5 years, a £15,000 travel budget, and contingency funding.]

PhD scholarship in Programming Languages for Design Computation at the University of Kent

This funded PhD project sits at the intersection of programming languages and Design Computation, with a strong focus on applications in architecture, engineering, and construction. The project asks how new programming languages, systems, and tools can better support collaborative thinking and reasoning in the multi-disciplinary design of physical buildings and engineering structures.

Design Computation goes beyond conventional CAD by using programs to generate designs, manage data, and evaluate design decisions. The successful candidate will explore ideas that could influence both domain-specific design workflows and potentially more general-purpose programming paradigms.

This studentship is supported by the University of Kent’s LASE and includes industrial collaboration with Buro Happold. The student will benefit from engagement with advanced industrial practice, providing insight into engineering workflows and the opportunity to consider real-world impact and deployment.

Funding is generous and covers tuition fees at either the Home or International rate for 3.5 years, a maintenance grant equivalent to the UKRI National Minimum Doctoral Stipend, a travel budget of £15,000, and contingency funding.

Eligibility: Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, at least a first or upper second-class honours degree in a relevant subject, ideally with a Master’s degree or equivalent. The project is open to Home and Overseas (including EU) applicants. Strong programming language design interest or experience, an interdisciplinary mindset, and a solid mathematical background are desirable.

Deadline: 22 December 2026, 23:59 GMT for a 2027 April start.

How to apply: Apply for a Computer Science PhD at the University of Kent. Clearly indicate that you want to be considered for the PL4DC PhD studentship, include a research proposal of roughly 4–5 pages, provide evidence of qualifications, two academic references, and the required supporting documentation. Applicants may contact Dr. Dominic Orchard before applying to discuss proposal ideas.
