Red Stag TimberLab PhD Scholarship

This PhD scholarship at the University of Waikato offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the behaviour and design of timber portal frame systems for industrial applications, with a particular focus on the performance of knee connections. Developed in partnership with Red Stag TimberLab, the project provides a strong industry context and aims to deliver practical, buildable solutions for the construction sector in New Zealand.

The research will explore the use of engineered wood products such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam, combined with steel components where appropriate, to develop efficient and industry-relevant structural systems. Key aspects include characterising connection behaviour—covering load transfer mechanisms, stiffness, strength, and failure modes—within portal frame systems. The project will employ analytical, numerical (finite element), and experimental methods to create validated models and design-oriented methodologies. Experimental work will be supported by industry-supplied materials and components, ensuring direct relevance to current manufacturing and construction practices.

Outcomes are expected to include practical design guidance, validated connection solutions, and performance benchmarks that align with New Zealand engineering practice, supporting the wider adoption of timber portal frames in industrial construction. The scholarship provides up to $30,000 per year for up to 36 months, plus domestic tuition fees and the Student Services Fee.

Applicants should have a strong academic background in civil or structural engineering (or a closely related field), with demonstrated knowledge of structural analysis and design, especially in timber and/or steel structures. Experience or interest in finite element modelling or numerical analysis is desirable, as is an interest in experimental structural testing. Candidates must be eligible for PhD enrolment at the University of Waikato and should be able to undertake independent research, communicate effectively, and engage with industry partners.
