About this position
Dublin City University is offering four-year PhD Scholarships in the School of Theology, Philosophy, and Music, open to excellent scholars with strong research proposals in Theology and Religious Studies, Philosophy and Ethics, or Music. The scholarships provide full tuition fees and an annual stipend of €25,000 (approx. £21,744.90), renewable for up to four years subject to satisfactory annual progression. The School is a vibrant, interdisciplinary academic community with internationally recognised staff and a commitment to world-class research and social and cultural engagement.
Research proposals are invited in a wide range of topics, including Systematic Theology, Political and Philosophical Theology, Intersection of Theology, Philosophy, Music, and Ethics, Textual History and Religious Aspects of Semitic languages, Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, Reception History of the Old Testament, New Testament and Early Christianity, Comparative Sacred Texts, Interreligious Dialogue, Theological Ethics, Phenomenology, Early Modern Philosophy, Historiography of Western Philosophy, Philosophical Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Bioethics, AI Ethics, Music in Digital Cultures (including AI), Electroacoustic Music/Sound Studies, Music, Technology, and Higher Education, Music and Arts Infrastructure, Choral Studies, Historical Musicology, Applied Musicology, Contemporary Music, Music Cognition, and Jazz Musicology.
Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree at first-class honours or at least 2.1 level in a relevant subject. A relevant Master’s qualification is desirable but not required; those currently completing a Master’s are also eligible. Applicants should make informal contact with an academic staff member whose research area aligns with their proposed doctoral work before applying. Applications must include a cover letter, CV with two academic referees, degree certificates, transcripts, a research proposal of approximately 2,000 words with bibliography, and evidence of English language proficiency if required. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview in April. Successful applicants will register through the University’s Student Application Portal and must meet all entry requirements.
