About this position

PhD Student – scientific scholarship at the Military University of Technology, Institute of Optoelectronics, Poland.

This opportunity is centered on biodegradable zinc and zinc-based alloys for smart orthopedic implants. The research combines alloy casting, thermomechanical processing, severe plastic deformation, and numerical modelling to study process–structure–property relationships.

Research topics include: friction stir processing (FSP), equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP), hot extrusion, microstructural and phase characterization, mechanical testing, corrosion/degradation assessment, and simulation of casting and deformation processes.

Funding: scientific scholarship of PLN 6,073.75 per month for up to 32 months. The project is funded by the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) under the FIRST TEAM programme, co-financed by the European Union through FENG 2021–2027.

Eligibility highlights: Master’s degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field; excellent English; strong motivation for experimental research; practical experience with MATLAB, COMSOL, ANSYS, Thermo-Calc, or similar tools; metallic materials processing experience is preferred. Applicants must not receive another FNP scholarship and must be enrolled in a Doctoral School in Poland.

Application deadline: 2 November 2026, 23:59 (Europe/Warsaw). Planned start: November 2026.

How to apply: Email the required documents to [email protected]. Include a cover letter, CV with photo and consent form, master’s diploma, and proof of Doctoral School enrollment. Password-protect files containing personal data and send the password separately.

Funding details

What's required

Master’s degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field. Very good command of English and strong motivation for experimental research are required. Practical experience in numerical modelling and simulation of materials, solidification or thermomechanical processing using MATLAB, COMSOL, ANSYS, Thermo-Calc, or equivalent tools is required. Hands-on experience in metallic materials processing is strongly preferred, and experience with casting, friction stir processing (FSP), equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP), hot extrusion, heat treatment, materials characterization, or corrosion/electrochemical testing will be an advantage. The applicant must not receive another scholarship funded by the Foundation for Polish Science. A cover letter, CV with photo and consent form, master’s diploma, and proof of enrollment in a Doctoral School in Poland are required.

How to apply

Send the application by email to [email protected]. Include a cover letter, CV with photo and consent form, a copy of your master’s diploma, and a document confirming enrollment in a Doctoral School in Poland. Password-protect files containing personal data and send the password separately.
