About this position

PhD Studentship at the University of Cambridge in the Ali Lab: Discovery of Rational Therapeutic Biomarkers in Breast Cancer by Systems Pathology and Deep Learning.

This project sits at the intersection of breast cancer biology, spatial omics, pathology, and machine learning. The aim is to identify robust multidimensional biomarkers that can help predict which patients are most likely to benefit from emerging therapies, including immunotherapy and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), while reducing unnecessary toxicity for those unlikely to respond.

The research will use modern multiomic spatial methods together with deep learning to analyse large multimodal datasets from breast cancer patient cohorts. The datasets include imaging mass cytometry and spatial transcriptomics, spanning observational studies and clinical trials. A key goal is to define the landscape of novel target expression, quantify heterogeneity, and assess how tissue architecture shapes expression profiles and treatment response.

The project is hosted by the Ali Lab, a collaborative and interdisciplinary group spanning clinicians, pathologists, computational scientists, and cancer biologists. The student will receive training in cancer pathology, highly multiplexed imaging, predictive modelling, and quantitative analysis in the fast-growing field of spatial cancer biology.

Supervisor: Dr Hamid Raza Ali.
