About this position
PhD studentship at the University of Exeter through the GW4 BioMed3 MRC Doctoral Landscape Programme. This project, How Sights Become Signals for Learning, investigates how the brain learns that a visual cue predicts something important, and how visual information is transformed into dopamine signals involved in motivation, action, and decision-making.
The research sits at the intersection of neuroscience, behaviour, and computational modelling. The successful student will work with a suite of advanced techniques including in vivo electrophysiology, fibre photometry, fast-scan cyclic voltammetry, targeted optogenetic stimulation, behavioural tasks, and computational modelling. The project is designed to uncover the neural circuits underlying learning in real time and will provide strong training in methods relevant to Parkinson’s disease and psychiatric disorders.
This is one of up to 18 studentships offered across the GW4 BioMed3 Doctoral Landscape Award partnership. The studentship is four years in duration and is funded by the MRC through the GW4 BioMed3 programme. Funding includes UK tuition fees and a Doctoral Stipend matching the UK Research Council National Minimum (£21,805 per annum for 2026/27, updated each year). Additional research training and support funding of up to £5,000 per year is also available.
The opportunity is available to UK and international students. The stated application deadline is 21 October 2026, and the project start date is October 2027. Applicants should review the official Exeter funding page for full competition and application details.
