About this position

PhD Studentship at the University of Nottingham in Advanced Microwave Technology Development for Activated Carbon Reactivation.

This project sits within the Net2Zero Centre for Doctoral Training and focuses on developing more energy-efficient, lower-carbon microwave reactivation methods for activated carbon used in water and air treatment. The research is highly relevant to chemical engineering, environmental science, materials science, and related process engineering areas, with applications to contaminant removal including taste and odour compounds, PFAS, and other emerging pollutants.

The successful candidate will work on innovative microwave reactivation processes in collaboration with industry partner Dr Andrew Gill at Puragen Ltd, and will gain experience in laboratory-scale and pilot-scale process development and scale-up. The CDT also offers interdisciplinary training, access to research facilities, international collaboration opportunities, and a three-month placement with industry, research collaborators, or policymakers.

Eligibility: applicants should hold, or expect to obtain before the start date, a First Class or strong 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent), and/or a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Particle Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Strong communication, teamwork, and safety awareness are expected. This opportunity is open to Home Fee Status candidates only.

Funding: UKRI tax-free stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/27, full tuition fee support, and a Research Training Support Grant (RTSG).

Location: Nottingham, United Kingdom. Programme length: four years. Start date: December 2026.

How to apply: submit an application through the University of Nottingham vacancy portal (ref ENG414). For research questions, contact Professor Hao Liu or Professor Eleanor Binner; for eligibility and application process questions, contact the Net2Zero CDT Team.
