About this position
EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award 2026/27: Civil Engineering at the University of Leeds offers 2 PhD studentships in a strong research environment within the School of Civil Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
The linked research themes include climate-resilient biogas upgrade approaches for biohydrogen and biomethane recovery from organic wastes, data-driven environmental assessment of next-generation concrete, energy micropiles for sustainable retrofit, and UK bridges moving under climate change: data-driven assessment of corrosion risk. These topics connect Civil Engineering with Environmental Science, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, and climate-focused infrastructure research.
This is a UK-only opportunity for applicants eligible to pay fees at the Home (UK) rate. Applicants should normally have at least a first class or upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. Candidates who already hold a PhD or are currently registered for a PhD are not eligible. Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds during the studentship.
Funding includes fees plus a tax-free maintenance grant at the standard UKRI rate of £21,805 per year for 3.5 years. Previous University of Leeds graduates may receive an additional £3,000 per year top-up for 3.5 years. Training and support are also provided.
To apply, submit a formal research degree application through the University of Leeds website. Choose Research Degrees – Research Postgraduate, set the admission year to 2026/27, select EPSRC Engineering and Physical Sciences DTP, and clearly state the project name and named supervisor in the Research Information section. Upload full transcripts, a personal statement, and CV by 30 September 2026. Informal contact with the supervisor(s) is encouraged before applying.
