About this position

PhD Studentship at the University of Cambridge in Comparative innate immune sensing of zoonotic viruses with Professor Brian Ferguson in the Department of Pathology.

This project investigates why some viruses cause severe disease after crossing into a new species while others do not. The research will examine how differences in pattern recognition receptor (PRR) signalling between host species influence virus infection, adaptation, and zoonotic emergence. Using molecular virology, immunology, and comparative approaches, the project will compare PRR pathways and downstream immune responses across host species to identify conserved and species-specific mechanisms that shape cross-species infection outcomes.

The studentship is fully funded for 4 years from October 2027. Funding covers the student stipend at the current Research Council rate and Home University Fees. This opportunity is available only to students who qualify for UK Home fees.

Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, the equivalent of a UK upper second-class honours degree (2.1) or higher in a relevant undergraduate honours or Masters degree. By the time of interview, candidates must have met the university language requirements for admission. The post also asks applicants to explain their motivation for pursuing a PhD in this area, outline their research interests and background, and describe the qualities and experience they will bring.

Applications must be submitted online via the University of Cambridge Applicant Portal for PhD in Pathology (BLPA22). A complete application must include all supporting documents and 2 academic references. The closing date is 2 December 2026. Quote reference PK51376 in your application and correspondence.
