PhD Studentship in Computer Science: Policy-Compliant Secure AI at Newcastle University

This PhD studentship explores how to build AI services that stay useful while obeying legal, regulatory, contractual, or organisational constraints on data use and disclosure. The project is set in the Cryptography and AI Security Lab within the School of Computing at Newcastle University, and is especially relevant to researchers interested in trustworthy AI, privacy-preserving systems, cryptography, and secure machine learning.

Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a strong degree in computer science, cybersecurity, mathematics, or a closely related discipline. A minimum 2:1 Honours degree in computer science is required. A Masters degree is not essential if the applicant has a strong 2:1 or can demonstrate relevant work- or research-based experience, although a Masters may be beneficial. The project values experience in cryptography, machine learning, or systems implementation, together with strong programming skills and an interest in proofs and prototypes. Applicants should also be prepared to build knowledge in cryptography, privacy-enhancing technologies such as federated learning, mathematics including number theory and game theory, machine learning, and programming in C++, Java, or Python. Non-native English speakers need IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 in each sub-skill, and some international applicants may require ATAS clearance.
