About this position

University of Strathclyde is advertising a PhD studentship in Health History on “Unorthodox health activism in Britain after 1948”. The project examines alternative approaches to health in Britain across the 20th and 21st centuries, with a focus on activism, community organising, and the experiences of people involved in unorthodox health movements.

The studentship is affiliated with the Wellcome-funded project A Transnational History of AIDS Denial: Origins, Manifestations and Persistence, 1981 to the present. The post encourages related research on topics such as anti-vaxx movements, cancer denial, complementary and alternative medicine (CAMs), media representations of alternative health movements, regional activism, spiritual/religious health communities, and wellness movements.

Funding: Home fees plus an equivalent UKRI stipend are covered for 3 years. The stipend for a 1 October 2026 start is £21,805 per year tax-free, paid monthly. International applicants may apply, but successful candidates must cover the difference between Home and International fees.

Eligibility: Applicants need a high 2:1 or 1:1 honours degree and a Masters degree in History or a cognate discipline, with Merit/Distinction preferred. Predicted masters results may be accepted if the degree finishes before the PhD begins. IELTS Academic or equivalent English language proficiency is required for non-native English speakers.

How to apply: Submit the application online via Pegasus for PhD History, using the project title exactly as listed. Upload a 1000-word project proposal, 500-word personal statement, CV, two academic references, and degree certificates/transcripts by 26 June 2026 at 17:00 BST. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed online on 21 July 2026, and the successful candidate must start on 1 October 2026.
