About this position
The University of Reading is inviting applications for a funded PhD studentship in Law or Criminology within the School of Law. This opportunity is open to high-quality candidates with strong, original research proposals in any area of law or criminology, provided the topic aligns with available supervisory capacity and support.
The School of Law offers an inclusive and supportive research environment for doctoral researchers, with active research centres and clusters including Law, Justice and Society, Global Law at Reading, The Centre for Commercial Law and Financial Regulation, and the Crime and Justice Research Cluster. The project is intended for candidates who can demonstrate academic excellence, strong research potential, and a well-developed proposal with clear analytical questions, methodological innovation, and a feasible contribution to knowledge.
This is a 4-year award (or equivalent for part-time study) and includes full Home or International tuition fees as appropriate plus a stipend broadly in line with the UKRI minimum stipend (noted as £21,805 in 2026/27). The award also includes a research training allowance of £500 per year, subject to application. Candidates must not hold another scholarship supporting the proposed PhD research.
Eligibility requires applicants to have an offer of a place to study for a PhD at the School of Law for a September 2027 start or later in the 2027/28 academic year, as agreed. The selection panel will look closely at academic achievement, relevant research experience, publications or funding, and the fit of the project with the School.
The application process has two steps. First, apply for the PhD position online by 12 noon on 8 January 2027 and select PhD in Law during the application. Applicants should quote reference DRC27-002 in the scholarships section. Second, by 12 noon on 4 February 2027, email a fully referenced research proposal (maximum 1000 words excluding references and title) and a two-page CV to [email protected]. Decisions are expected by the end of March 2027.
For enquiries, the contact given is Dr Nora Honkala, Deputy Director of Postgraduate Research, at [email protected].
