About this position

PhD studentship at Newcastle University in medicinal chemistry, focused on high-throughput chemistry, direct-to-biology testing, and drug discovery for cancer targets.

The project aims to speed up early-stage discovery by making, purifying, and testing around 100 candidate compounds in a single workflow, potentially within a week. You will work at the interface of synthetic organic chemistry and biology, gaining hands-on training in medicinal chemistry, automation, high-throughput synthesis, and biological testing.

The studentship is led by Professor Mike Waring and Dr Hannah Stewart in an established integrated drug discovery group at Newcastle University. The project also involves collaboration with Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals, with frequent interaction and co-supervision from company scientists.

Funding: 100% home fees covered, plus a minimum tax-free annual living allowance of £21,805 (2026/27 UKRI rate). Additional project costs are provided.

Eligibility: Home (UK residency) candidates only. Applicants should normally hold at least a 2:1 Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. A Master’s degree is not always required if you have a strong 2:1 or equivalent experience. Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills are essential, and prior research experience is valued.

Deadline: 5 October 2026. Start date: January 2027. Duration: 4 years.

How to apply: Submit an application through the Newcastle University Apply to Newcastle Portal. Use programme code 8100F, select PhD Chemistry (full time), and enter studentship code DLA2629a. Upload the required personal statement template and follow the instructions in the advert.
