About this position
Coventry University is advertising a funded PhD studentship on microplastics and chemical additives from food-grade baby feeding products, with a cotutelle arrangement involving Deakin University (Melbourne, Australia). The project is interdisciplinary and combines environmental science, chemistry, toxicology, and neuroscience.
The research will investigate the leachability of microplastics and chemical additives from plastic baby bottles and food pouches, the influence of consumer feeding behaviours, and the potential toxicity of these substances on neuronal development using zebrafish embryos and human neuronal cell lines. The work is structured into three work packages: behavioural study, comparative chemical analysis, and toxicity testing.
This is a full-time PhD lasting 3 to 3.5 years. Funding includes tuition fees and stipend. The successful candidate will receive research training and career development support through Coventry University’s Doctoral and Researcher College.
Eligibility is open to UK/International (including EU) graduates who meet the admission and scholarship criteria for both universities. Applicants should have a relevant BSc or MSc in chemistry, life and environmental sciences, toxicology, or environmental chemistry, with strong academic performance and research potential. Required skills include laboratory experience, instrumental analysis (FTIR, Raman, LC-MS, GC-MS), statistics/data analysis, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. IELTS 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each component is required.
Deadline: 7 May 2026. Start date: September 2026. To apply, contact Associate Professor Anna Bogush for further details and submit the full application package to Coventry University, including supporting documents, a covering letter, and a 2000-word supporting statement.
