King’s College London’s Leverhulme Centre for Research on Slavery in War is advertising a fully funded PhD studentship in narratives of enslavement and their legacies, jointly supervised across the Department of English and Department of War Studies by Dr. Michael Collins and Dr. Maeve Ryan.
The project invites innovative doctoral proposals on slavery broadly defined, including post-enslavement life-writing, the “slave narrative” genre, the legacies of enslavement in fiction, transatlantic literary traditions, and critical theories of race and racialisation emerging from histories of enslavement and indenture. The preferred focus is the British Empire and the United States, though transnational and comparative approaches are encouraged.
Relevant research interests include literature, history, war studies, American studies, British studies, transnationalism, narratology, racial capitalism, human rights, and legal frameworks. The centre also welcomes work engaging with conflict, diasporic movement, and the ways war shapes narrative traditions.
Funding includes UKRI Home Tuition Fees, full maintenance for home and international students, a doctoral stipend, London weighting, collaborative activity funding, and an additional RTSG. The studentship can be taken up full-time or part-time.
Applicants should have an excellent academic record, a 2:1 honours degree, and a Master’s degree at high merit or above in a directly relevant discipline. Strong archival skills are expected, and applicants should be willing to contribute to public outreach. English-language requirements for War Studies apply.
