About this position

[Fully funded studentship with home tuition fee waiver, living costs stipend at the UKRI recommended level (£21,805 for 2026-27), and a £10,000 research allowance in total. Additional access to £2,500 through Proficio for training courses.]

The University of Essex is offering a fully funded Master’s plus PhD studentship under the Sustainable Transitions – Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme. This opportunity is designed for applicants interested in environment and sustainability research as it relates to government, political science, and public policy.

The award includes a fully funded MA Politics or MPP Master of Public Policy followed by a PhD. The programme is structured to build interdisciplinary researchers with the skills to contribute to sustainable transitions at local, national, and international levels. During the Master’s year, the successful applicant will develop the proposal further in consultation with the supervisory team before progressing to the PhD phase.

Applicants with an undergraduate degree in political science or a related subject are invited to submit a research proposal of up to 1000 words. The call is broad, allowing applicants to shape their own project area within the overall theme. To ensure interdisciplinarity, applicants must choose one additional discipline to integrate into the research: Law, Business, Sociology, or Life Science. No prior knowledge of the additional discipline is required, as training will be provided.

The studentship is UK domiciled only and intended for candidates from a low-income background and/or from specified Black or Mixed ethnicity categories. It is also restricted to applicants who do not already hold a master’s degree.

Funding covers home tuition fees and provides a living-costs stipend at the UK Research and Innovation recommended level. The stipend for 2026-27 is £21,805. Scholars also receive a £10,000 research allowance for authorised research costs such as supplies, equipment, and fieldwork, plus access to £2,500 via Proficio for training courses.

Students will benefit from the Sustainable Transitions training programme, interdisciplinary methods training, secondary discipline training, and ongoing development support. They may also join the University of Essex’s Centre for Environment and Society for events and networking opportunities.

Deadline: 14 September 2026.
