PhD Studentship: Mixed reality for built environment assessment at the University of Warwick explores how people experience buildings and spaces through multiple senses, and how mixed reality can be used to study these perceptions in a controlled way.

The project sits at the intersection of mixed reality, psychophysics, civil engineering, and human factors. It aims to develop multisensory assessment methods for the built environment by collecting visual, auditory, and vibrational data from real settings and translating them into mixed-reality simulations. The research will support controlled studies of multisensory perception and help generate evidence for improved, human-centred design standards and construction guidance.

You will work with human participants, gathering subjective feedback through questionnaires and recording physiological measures such as heart rate and skin conductance. The project is especially relevant to environments where noise and vibration affect well-being, and it is intended to inform next-generation approaches to design that promote health, comfort, and quality of life.

The studentship provides home tuition fees and a tax-free stipend, currently £21,805, paid at the prevailing UKRI rate for 3.5 years of full-time study. International applicants are welcome to apply, but must cover the difference between home and international fee levels.

Applicants should have a strong 2:1 or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Human Factors, or a related discipline. Useful technical skills include C++ or C# programming and experience with Unity or Unreal for simulation development.
