About this position
The Oxford Interdisciplinary Life and Environmental Science Training Programme (ILESLA) is a 4-year full-time PhD studentship based at Oxford Brookes University and delivered within a wider Oxford partnership. It offers a place on a BBSRC/NERC-funded training programme spanning biological and environmental sciences, with research themes including plant cell biology, mammalian cell biology, molecular biology, parasitology, developmental biology, bioinformatics, conservation, ecology, and bioimaging.
The programme combines taught interdisciplinary skills, two exploratory rotation projects in Year 1, and a 3-year research project selected after the rotations. A 12-week professional internship is included during the research phase, and students gain access to state-of-the-art laboratories and a bioimaging suite. Candidates admitted through Oxford Brookes must complete one rotation at Brookes and another at a partner organisation, and the PhD project must include an Oxford Brookes supervisor.
Funding is strong: the studentship covers tuition fees, stipend, and bench fees. The stipend is at the UKRI rate, currently £21,805 for academic year 2026/27, plus a £2,000 annual uplift. Visa and associated costs are not funded. The opportunity is open to Home UK/EU and international applicants, subject to UKRI eligibility criteria.
Applicants should have a first-class or strong upper second-class honours degree in a relevant subject such as biochemistry, biology, chemistry, geology, geography, physics, mathematics, statistics, or computer science. International applicants must also meet English-language requirements with IELTS Academic 7.5 overall and no sub-score below 7.0, or an accepted equivalent. The closing date is 6 January 2027 at 12:00 midday UK time, with interviews expected in late February or early March 2027 and a start date of September 2027.
Applications are submitted through the University of Oxford Apply button, with applicants asked to state their theme and any preferred supervisors. Queries can be directed to Oxford Brookes University, and a list of potential supervisors is available on request.
