PhD studentship at the University of Bath on improving the provision of clinical services for youth with disruptive behaviour disorders, including conduct disorder. This project sits within the NIHR Mental Health Research Group and is linked with collaborators in Exeter and Bristol, offering a strong environment for mental health services research and child and adolescent wellbeing research.

The PhD will map mental health service provision for children and young people through a nationally representative survey of healthcare professionals, commissioners, and parents/caregivers. The study will examine whether young people with conduct problems are diagnosed and accepted for treatment, whether services follow NICE guidance, what training needs clinicians have, and what barriers and facilitators affect access to care. The project also includes analysis of existing longitudinal data to compare mental health, wellbeing, and health economic outcomes for those who access support versus those who do not.

Further work may include qualitative and quantitative methods such as vignette studies to assess recognition and diagnosis of disruptive behaviour disorders, plus cohort analysis of mental health trajectories. The ultimate goal is to produce a publicly available national map of care, identify examples of good practice, and inform healthcare commissioning and mental health policy for a disadvantaged group and their families.

This is advertised as part of competition for one of 18 fully funded MRC studentships starting in October 2027. Funding includes a stipend of £21,805 per annum, plus up to £2,000 per year for research costs and training, £300 per year for travel or conference attendance, and up to £5,000 in flexible funding for high-cost research or external training.
