About this position

[Fully funded masters degree followed by fully funded PhD; home tuition fee waiver; living costs stipend at UKRI recommended level (£20,780 for 2025-26, 2026-27 TBA); £2,500 Proficio training support; £10,000 research allowance for research costs and further training.]

PhD Studentship: Waste Management - Towards Sustainability at the University of Essex is an interdisciplinary opportunity within the Sustainable Transitions – Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme. The project sits at the intersection of law, life sciences, and environmental sustainability, with a research focus on waste management and its broader social, legal, and ecological implications.

The successful applicant will first undertake a fully funded master's degree and then progress to a fully funded PhD. The topic is broadly defined, allowing room to shape a specific proposal around themes such as sustainable waste management in sensitive ecosystems, the role of state and non-state actors in waste governance, links between waste management and human rights to health or water, or technological innovation in waste systems.

This studentship is designed for a person from an underrepresented group and is open only to UK domiciled applicants who do not already hold a master's degree and who meet the eligibility criteria related to low-income household background and/or specific Black or Mixed ethnicity categories. The project would particularly suit an applicant with a background in law and an interest in life sciences and environmental sciences. Prior training in the hard sciences is not required, and an interest in South Asia or another region of the Global South is desirable.

The interdisciplinary project will be jointly supervised by faculty members from the Law and Life Sciences departments. Scholars will receive training through the Sustainable Transitions programme, including interdisciplinary research methods, secondary discipline training, and ongoing support. Additional benefits include Proficio funding of £2,500 for training courses and a £10,000 research allowance for authorised research costs such as fieldwork, supplies, and equipment. The award also includes a home tuition fee waiver and a living costs stipend at the UKRI recommended level.

The application deadline is 14 September 2026. Interested candidates should develop a proposal aligned with the project area and apply via the University of Essex opportunity page.
