About this position
The University of Antwerp is recruiting a full-time postdoctoral scholarship holder in the field of redox flow batteries within the ELCAT research group in the Faculty of Applied Engineering. This appointment is embedded in RECHARGE, an ERC-funded European research project led by Professor Jonas Hereijgers, focused on developing the next generation of redox flow batteries.
The successful candidate will join a large and highly international research environment at the University of Antwerp, working in a group of more than 50 researchers with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. ELCAT’s research spans electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering, with a strong emphasis on advanced electrochemical reactors, batteries, and sustainable industrial technologies.
The position centers on high-quality scientific research in redox flow batteries. The postdoctoral scholar will develop and test 3D electrodes, investigate hydrodynamics, shunt currents, and dynamic flow regimes, and contribute to stack development and scale-up of redox flow battery systems. The role also includes reporting research findings, publishing in academic journals, assisting with laboratory oversight, contributing to ongoing projects, supervising PhD students and other team members, and helping develop new research proposals and external funding applications.
Applicants should hold a PhD in Engineering, (Electro)Chemical Engineering, Applied Engineering, or a related equivalent discipline. Strong experience in experimental redox flow battery research and electrochemistry is expected, with added value for candidates who have experience in scaling-up and stacking battery systems. Fluency in English is required, preferably at C1 level. Experience with fundraising, proposal writing, and supervision of junior researchers is advantageous. Recommendation letters are encouraged.
The position is offered as a full-time postdoctoral scholarship holder appointment for one year, renewable up to a total of three years following positive evaluation. The planned start date is as soon as possible. The monthly scholarship is determined according to the University of Antwerp’s BAP pay scales for postdoctoral scholarship holders. Most work will be carried out at Campus Drie Eiken in Antwerp, Belgium.
Applications must be submitted through the University of Antwerp online application platform by 17 August 2026. Required attachments include a motivation letter, academic CV, and possible reference letters. For application-form support, contact [email protected]. For questions about the position, contact Professor Jonas Hereijgers at [email protected].
