About this position
KTH Royal Institute of Technology is recruiting a postdoctoral scholarship in electrochemical production of synthetic graphene oxide from carbon fibres within the WALP startup initiative.
The project is centered on electrochemistry, carbon and graphene materials, advanced characterization, and structure-property relationships. The research aims to develop and scale a novel electrochemical route for producing ultra-pure synthetic graphene oxide (GO) from carbon fibres, replacing conventional graphite-based routes with a controlled electrochemical exfoliation process. The work includes optimization of electrolyte composition, voltage, and residence time; control of GO thickness, oxidation degree, and functional group distribution; development of continuous or semi-continuous production strategies; and benchmarking against commercial graphene oxide.
A major emphasis is on understanding the underlying mechanisms of electrochemical exfoliation, interfacial charge transfer, and structural evolution in advanced carbon materials. The position is suited to an experimental scientist who enjoys deep lab work, quantitative analysis of electrochemical data, and fundamental discovery with technological relevance.
Eligibility highlights: PhD in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field; strong experimental electrochemistry background; ability to design and execute independent research; and publication record in peer-reviewed journals. Preferred experience includes carbon-based materials, electrochemical interfaces, and advanced characterization techniques such as Raman, XPS, SEM/TEM, and AFM.
Funding: 2 years, full-time, scholarship of 29,000 SEK/month. The post is explicitly described as a scholarship, not employment. EU citizens on scholar or private funding must provide EHIC insurance covering the full stay in Sweden.
Application window: deadline 2026-06-15. Apply by email with CV, cover letter, research statement (max 2 pages), and three references, and mark the application with reference number PA-2026-1490.
