About this position
Umeå University’s Department of Computing Science is offering a 2-year postdoctoral scholarship in interactive perception in agri-robotics, within the project “Robot-plant interaction for improved plant monitoring and early drought detection.” The position is based in the Collaborative Robotics Lab, where research spans AI-driven robotics, explainable human-robot interaction, robotic vision and perception, agricultural robotics, collaborative motion planning, physics-informed control, and digital twin technologies.
The project develops robotic methods for plant health monitoring by combining robot-plant interaction, multi-modal perception, and machine learning. The work focuses on evaluating algorithms for early drought stress detection, including interaction primitives, processing plant responses to applied forces, and fusing interaction-derived signals with visual data for anomaly detection in field-relevant conditions.
This is a full-time scholarship funded by the KEMPE Foundations. The scholarship is tax-free and totals 720,000 SEK for two years, or 360,000 SEK per year.
Eligibility requires a completed doctoral degree or equivalent by the decision date. Preferred doctoral backgrounds include robotics, computer science, electrical engineering, physics, or a related field. Applicants should have experience in industrial robotics, autonomous systems, or robot perception; strong programming skills in Python and/or C++; experience with ROS/ROS2; machine learning or computer vision; experimental systems with hardware and sensors; multi-modal sensing such as RGB-D, thermal, LiDAR, spectral, or force/torque sensors; independent research; and good English. Experience in agricultural robotics, field robotics, manipulators, force-based sensing, anomaly detection, self-supervised learning, plant science collaboration, and field deployment is meritorious.
Apply through Umeå University’s Varbi system by 2026-09-15. The application should include a cover letter, CV with publication list, doctoral degree certificate or proof of expected completion, other diplomas and transcripts, thesis and relevant publications, other supporting documents, and contact details for two references.
Contact persons: Polina Kurtser and Ola Ringdahl, Associate Professors at Umeå University.
