About this position

Rinn Energy is a large, interdisciplinary PhD scholarship programme focused on energy system decarbonisation across Ireland. The network brings together ten Irish institutions and combines expertise in science, engineering, economics, policy, and social sciences to address the transition to a low-carbon energy future.

The PhD studentships are delivered through a structured cohort-based doctoral training programme. In addition to an individual research project, scholars will benefit from a broader skills development framework designed to support careers in academia, industry, and public service. Research themes across the network include renewable energy supply, smart grids, transport, industry, communities, and wider energy-system transformation.

Partners in the programme include University College Cork and University College Dublin as co-leads, together with Munster Technological University, University of Limerick, University of Galway, Maynooth University, Trinity College Dublin, Technological University Dublin, Dublin City University, and the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI).

Funding is strong and clearly defined: successful candidates receive a stipend of €25,000 per year for four years, tax free, plus additional funding support for conference attendance, equipment, and training activities. EU students will have fees covered automatically, while non-EU students may receive a fee reduction or waiver from their registered institution.

The call is for PhD studentships and indicates a January 2027 intake. Applicants should hold a bachelor degree or equivalent and must complete the application via the online form. The programme also states a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, and particularly encourages applications from under-represented groups.

Deadline: 23 October 2026 at 17:00 (Europe/Dublin).
