University of Florence PhD Scholarships

The University of Florence is advertising its XLII Cycle PhD Programmes for the 2026/2027 academic year in Italy. This is a doctoral opportunity with multiple research areas and a mix of scholarship-funded and unfunded positions. The call is suitable for applicants interested in advanced research across disciplines such as computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, cybersecurity, climate modeling, environmental science, economics, health sciences, engineering sciences, humanities, social sciences, and space research.

The programmes are hosted by the University of Florence, one of Italy’s leading universities, and are designed for full-time doctoral study over three years. The start date is planned for November 1, 2026. Applications open on May 12, 2026 and close on June 11, 2026 at 12:00 noon Italian time.

Funding is a major feature of this call. Scholarship holders receive €16,243 per year before social security charges, paid monthly. In addition, doctoral students may receive a 50% increase in scholarship funding for research periods abroad, a research budget equal to at least 10% of the scholarship amount, and possible one-off support of up to €5,000 for eligible international students. Some positions are funded by public institutions, private organizations, the Italian Space Agency, the National Cybersecurity Agency, and other research entities.

Eligibility is broad: applicants from all nationalities may apply if they hold a qualifying master’s-level degree or equivalent. The selection process may include academic evaluation, research proposal review, written exams, oral interviews, and language assessment. Some programmes allow online interviews. International applicants may need translated and legalized documents and, if admitted, must follow Italian visa and Universitaly procedures.
