About this position
Two fully funded PhD positions are available at the University of Twente in the Netherlands within the EU Chips Joint Undertaking project Moore4Power. The project sits at the interface of electrical engineering, power electronics, measurement science, sensor characterization, and calorimetry, with a strong focus on advanced SiC and GaN converter technologies.
One PhD project focuses on wideband current sensors for fast-switching power electronics. The work includes electromagnetic sensor design, modelling, prototyping, shielding, readout interfaces, calibration, and experimental validation. The target is to develop sensors with bandwidth above 300 MHz and very low insertion inductance, and to demonstrate them in representative switching circuits.
The second PhD project focuses on traceable efficiency measurement using electrical and thermal methods. This includes wideband voltage/current sensor characterization, uncertainty analysis, converter testing, and the design of a next-generation calorimeter. The goal is to combine electrical and calorimetric measurements to better quantify losses in high-efficiency power converters.
Applicants should hold an MSc in electrical engineering or a closely related field; for the second project, applied physics is also acceptable. Strong experimental skills are important. Helpful experience includes RF or microwave engineering, analogue electronics, PCB design, vector network analysis, oscilloscope measurements, precision measurement, thermal modelling, and calorimetry. Candidates should be motivated, careful, and comfortable working in an international team.
The position is full-time for four years and is fully funded. The salary is stated as €3,204 gross per month in year one rising to €4,051 in year four, plus holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, pension, and other Dutch university benefits.
The application deadline is 16 October 2026. Applicants should submit a motivation letter indicating whether they apply for PhD 1, PhD 2, or both, a CV, publication list if applicable, reference contacts, and BSc/MSc transcripts with grades. Interviews and a short technical presentation are part of the selection process.

What's required
Applicants should have an MSc degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field for PhD 1, or an MSc in electrical engineering, applied physics, or a closely related field for PhD 2, with strong experimental academic results. PhD 1 prefers a background in analogue electronics, RF or microwave engineering, wideband sensors, or high-frequency measurement techniques, plus interest in designing and debugging wideband current sensors; experience with electromagnetic or circuit simulation, PCB design, vector network analysis, or oscilloscope measurements is an advantage. PhD 2 prefers a background in electrical measurement, power electronics, instrumentation, or experimental physics, plus interest in electrical and thermal measurement techniques; experience with precision measurements, uncertainty analysis, data acquisition, power converter testing, thermal modelling, or calorimetry is an advantage. For both positions, candidates should be curious, creative, motivated, careful, systematic, able to analyse measurement limitations and uncertainty, communicate clearly in English, work in an international multidisciplinary team, and be willing to travel.
How to apply
Apply by 16 October 2026 via the AcademicTransfer/Euraxess application link. Include a motivation letter stating whether you apply for PhD 1, PhD 2, or both, a detailed CV, publication list if applicable, contact details of at least two references, and transcripts of your BSc and MSc studies with grades.
