About this position

Three fully funded PhD positions are available at Cyprus University of Technology within CPEC – Circular Power Electronics Converters Design, a Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network (Project No. 101312322). The positions are based in Limassol, Cyprus, in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering, and are part of a European consortium training 15 doctoral candidates across academia and industry.

Successful candidates will join an international research environment with academic and industrial supervision, network-wide training schools, consortium workshops, and international secondments. The appointments are designed for first-stage researchers interested in sustainable power electronics, reliable semiconductor devices, machine learning for engineering systems, and circularity-driven converter design.

DC1 – Sustainable and Reliable Design of SiC Semiconductor Devices and Gate Drivers focuses on TCAD and mixed-mode modelling of SiC MOSFETs, gate drivers, and degradation, with attention to performance, reliability, and sustainability. The supervisor is Dr Neophytos Lophitis.

DC5 – Power Module Health Monitoring and Lifetime Estimation explores physics-informed generative machine learning and Bayesian world models for SiC module health and remaining-useful-life prediction, supported by characterisation, accelerated ageing, and degradation modelling. The supervisor is Prof. Sotirios Chatzis, with Dr Neophytos Lophitis as supporting supervisor.

DC8 – Second-Life Modular Power Converters and Their Applications investigates assessment, derating, control, and reconfiguration of modular SiC converters for safe second-life use, including experimental validation and environmental assessment. The supervisor is Dr Neophytos Lophitis.

The positions are 36-month, full-time temporary employment contracts with social-security coverage and enrolment in a CUT doctoral programme. The funding is provided through the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network CPEC, with living, mobility, and family allowances stated in the announcement. The project also includes technical and transferable-skills training, conferences, and access to consortium facilities.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a relevant Bachelor’s or Master’s degree meeting CUT doctoral-admission requirements in engineering, applied physics, materials, AI/computer science, control, sustainability, or a closely related field. Candidates without a Master’s degree must complete at least 60 ECTS of postgraduate taught modules. Applicants may apply while finishing their qualifying degree, provided it is completed before enrolment. Excellent English is required, and candidates must satisfy the MSCA doctoral eligibility and mobility rules.

Application deadline: 18 November 2026, 23:59 Cyprus time. Starting date is January 2027 preferred, with later starts possible no later than July 2027; doctoral enrolment is planned for September 2027, subject to CUT and MSCA requirements. Applicants should use the official CUT doctoral application procedure, submit all required documents, and clearly indicate DC1, DC5, and/or DC8 with ranked preferences.

What's required

Applicants should hold a relevant Bachelor's or Master's degree meeting CUT doctoral-admission requirements in engineering, applied physics, materials, AI/computer science, control, sustainability, or a closely related discipline. Candidates admitted without a Master's degree must complete at least 60 ECTS of postgraduate taught modules as determined by CUT and the Department. Applicants may apply while completing their qualifying degree if it will be finished before enrolment. Strong academic performance, analytical ability, research potential, communication skills, and motivation for international/intersectoral training are expected; prior research, publications, or industrial experience are advantageous but not mandatory. Preferred background varies by project: DC1 prefers semiconductor physics, SiC/WBG devices, TCAD, reliability, gate drivers, SPICE/compact and electrothermal modelling, and characterisation; DC5 prefers probabilistic machine learning, Bayesian inference, latent/state-space models, Monte Carlo methods, uncertainty quantification, and PyTorch; DC8 prefers power converters, modular/fault-tolerant systems, control, condition monitoring/RUL, prototyping, HIL, or embedded control. Excellent written and spoken English is required, along with willingness to undertake international secondments and network training. At recruitment, candidates must not hold a doctoral degree or have defended a doctoral thesis, and must satisfy the MSCA mobility rule of no more than 12 months of residence or main activity in Cyprus in the 36 months immediately before recruitment, subject to MSCA exceptions.

How to apply

Apply through the official CUT doctoral application procedure and submit all documents required by the system. Identify DC1, DC5, and/or DC8 and rank your preferences. Use the official vacancy announcement for the complete recruitment instructions and eligibility details.
