About this position
PHAETHON Centre of Excellence is inviting applications for a PhD position (R1) in Smart Grids. This opportunity is designed for highly motivated early-stage researchers who want to contribute to cutting-edge work in future intelligent and sustainable energy systems.
The successful candidate will be enrolled as a full-time PhD student at the University of Cyprus and conduct research within a Research Unit of PHAETHON CoE in Cyprus. The project sits at the intersection of smart grids, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, and computer engineering, with a strong emphasis on advanced grid operation and control, optimized power flows, future power system modelling, and next-generation grid-flexible energy technologies.
The position is fully funded and includes monthly financial support corresponding to a gross annual rate of €18,000–€30,000 including the 13th salary, as well as tuition fee coverage for up to four years. Additional support includes access to state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure, research support, opportunities for funded mobility and research visits to the Technical University of Denmark and/or the University of Groningen, and participation in international conferences and scientific training. Residency in Cyprus is required.
There is also the possibility of joint or co-supervised PhD arrangements with the Technical University of Denmark and/or the University of Groningen, subject to eligibility and institutional approval. Candidates will work in an international, multidisciplinary and research-intensive environment with strong links to industry, policymakers, and international research institutions.
Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field, and should demonstrate strong academic performance, motivation for doctoral research, analytical thinking, research skills, and excellent English. Formal admission to the relevant University of Cyprus PhD programme is mandatory, and the award is conditional on acceptance and enrolment at UCY.
The application deadline is 6 November 2026.
