About this position

Aalto University’s School of Electrical Engineering is recruiting 4 Doctoral Researchers in robotics in Espoo, Finland. The positions span four research directions: safe autonomy in shared industrial environments, semantic communication for mission-critical robotics, distributed situational awareness and semantic scene understanding, and socially aware perception and behavior prediction.

The research is centered in the Mobile Robotics and Intelligent Robotics groups and focuses on autonomy under imperfect knowledge and uncertain sensing. Topics include perception, prediction, planning under uncertainty, SLAM/localization, spatio-temporal mapping, multi-robot coordination, semantic and goal-oriented communication, NextG networking, multimodal perception, vision-language models, probabilistic state estimation, 3D scene representations, graph-based knowledge representations, machine learning, computer vision, and interpretable AI.

Supervision is shared across Aalto faculty and researchers, including Assistant Professor Tomasz Kucner, Dr. Francesco Verdoja, Prof. Ville Kyrki, and Dr. Farzeen Munir. The work is closely connected to industrial and academic partners such as MIT, Stevens Institute, Nokia Bell Labs, Kalmar, Normet, Sandvik, and KWH Logistics, with validation in real-world sites and testbeds.

This is a fully funded doctoral researcher opportunity with a starting salary of 3143 €/month plus full benefits. The contract is initially for two years and may be extended to four years in total after a successful mid-term review. The working language is English.

Applicants should have an M.Sc. or equivalent in Robotics, Communications/EE, Computer Science, Control, ML/AI, Mechatronics, or Applied Mathematics, along with strong analytical, programming, mathematical, and writing skills. Python/C++ and ROS are valued. Position-specific experience in mobile robot perception, SLAM, motion prediction, field robotics, wireless communications (5G/6G, slicing, TSN), or information theory is a plus.
