About this position

AITHYRA is recruiting for its International PhD Program in AI for Biomedicine in Vienna, Austria. This fully funded doctoral call sits at the intersection of machine learning, experimental biology, chemistry, and medicine, with a strong emphasis on AI/ML for molecular medicine, lab automation, and translational biomedical research.

The program is designed for students from both quantitative and life science backgrounds. AITHYRA explicitly welcomes applicants with training in computer science, bioinformatics, mathematics, physics, statistics, medicine, biology, chemistry, bioengineering, engineering, or related fields. Prior biological or computational experience is not strictly required if you bring strong motivation and a willingness to learn across disciplines.

Research themes include geometric deep learning, generative AI, representation learning, high-throughput genetics and proteomics, molecular and cell biology, chemical biology, organic chemical synthesis, robotics, and automated laboratories. The broader scientific mission is to use AI as a co-pilot across the scientific process to understand and reprogram biological systems, with disease areas including cancer, immunology, infectious diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders.

The PhD is offered in partnership with TU Wien, University of Vienna, and Medical University of Vienna, and the degree may be awarded by one of these institutions. The program provides a highly interactive introductory phase, supervision by a top scientist with support from the AITHYRA Faculty, access to state-of-the-art technologies, and a multidisciplinary international environment.

Funding is strong: the position is fully funded, includes a generous employment contract, covers all research costs and work-related travel for 4 years, and offers a minimum gross monthly salary of EUR 2,832.10 paid 14 times per year. Additional benefits include full insurance coverage, health care services, subsidized lunch, and social, cultural, and sports activities.

The application deadline is 1 November 2026, with hearing dates from 27–29 January 2027 and a latest starting date of 1 September 2027. Applicants should review the application guidelines and detailed timeline on the AITHYRA PhD website before submitting.
