About this position
This PhD project at Manchester Metropolitan University offers an exciting opportunity to investigate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Extended Reality (XR) mediated learning experiences in higher education. The project aims to digitally transform HE learning by combining AI-driven personalisation with immersive XR technologies, creating adaptive, interactive, and collaborative hybrid environments. Supported by leading researchers in XR, the successful candidate will engage with academic, industry, and international partners, contributing to established Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) projects and developing a novel AI-XR prototype.
The research will address key government and education policy priorities, aiming to futureproof learning experiences and equip students with skills for a technology-driven, interconnected world. The candidate will have the unique opportunity to drive the development of an AI-XR curriculum framework, providing valuable insights into the evolving XR landscape and informing digital education policy. The project’s objectives include exploring AI for enhancing student experiences, identifying XR opportunities for international collaborative learning, assessing the impact of AI-XR teaching methods, and proposing a new curriculum framework for higher education.
Funding is available for both Home and International students, covering tuition fees for three years and providing a standard UKRI stipend (£20,780 for 2025/26). The project is one of five independent PhD projects, with three funded studentships available. Applications will undergo an initial review by supervisors, followed by a second-round interview for shortlisted candidates, with final funding decisions based on performance.
Applicants should have a background in emerging and/or immersive technologies and education, teaching, and learning. Essential qualities include enthusiasm for multidisciplinary research, high motivation, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Desirable skills include an excellent undergraduate degree or MSc in business technology, Industry 4.0, or related disciplines (minimum UK first or upper second-class honours), familiarity with analytical techniques such as SPSS, and prior research experience.
