About this position
Ghent University is recruiting for an Assistant Department of Internal Medicine, Reproduction and Population Medicine (30042) within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department DI08. This is a PhD-oriented research assistant appointment with a strong clinical and teaching component, focused on equine internal medicine.
At least 50% of the appointment is dedicated to academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation. The role also includes teaching support in the equine internal medicine clinic, assistance with internal and external departmental services, and participation in night and weekend duty rotations. The position is designed to help develop expertise in equine internal medicine while contributing to the department’s academic and clinical work.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a Master in veterinary medicine/science by the start of employment. If the degree was earned outside the European Union, a NARIC certificate of equivalence is required. The university also recommends teaching experience, additional training, conference participation, and prior experience in equine internal medicine. Strong teaching and communication skills are essential. For communication within the equine clinic, Dutch is essential; French and English are assets.
Appointment details: the contract is for two years, renewable twice for two additional years depending on positive evaluation. The 85% mandate is supplemented by an additional 15% appointment as scientific staff, making it effectively full-time. The appointment starts 1 October 2026 at the earliest, and remuneration follows salary scale AAP3.
Application deadline: 9 August 2026 at 23:59 Brussels time. Applications must be submitted online only via the e-recruitment system. Required documents include a merged PDF with CV and study results, a cover letter, a transcript of the required degree, and, where relevant, a translation of the diploma and certificate of equivalence or proof of application for it.
