About this position

University of Warsaw, Faculty of History, is offering a postdoctoral (R2) position in the NCN Sonata Bis 11 project “Thinking about Thinking: Conceptual Metaphors of Cognition in the Plutarch...”, based in Warsaw, Poland.

The project investigates how Plutarch describes cognitive processes such as thinking, understanding, memory, and learning, with a particular focus on metaphors of cognition. These metaphors are treated not simply as stylistic devices, but as clues to ancient understandings of the mind and its functioning. The research combines classical philology, history, literary studies, and cognitive linguistics, contributing to the emerging field of cognitive history.

The position is full-time and temporary, with a planned starting date of 1 November 2026. The workplace is the Faculty of History, University of Warsaw. The announcement specifies a salary of approximately 9,490 PLN gross per month (including the employer contribution) plus a 13th month salary, along with standard employment benefits such as paid annual leave.

Eligibility is highly specific. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in history, literary studies, linguistics, or philosophy, awarded no earlier than 2019 (with allowances for eligible career breaks under National Science Centre regulations). The doctorate must generally be from an institution other than the University of Warsaw, unless the candidate completed a postdoctoral fellowship of at least 10 months abroad after the degree. Candidates must not hold the title of professor or the degree of doktor habilitowany, and must not have previously collaborated with the project leader on a research grant.

Research experience should be demonstrated by publications in relevant areas, especially the literature of the Greek-speaking Roman Empire, the works of Plutarch, ancient reflection on cognition, conceptual metaphor, cognitive linguistics, cognitive history, or ancient models of the mind. The announcement also expects very good Ancient Greek, excellent English, and reading ability in at least one other foreign language. Familiarity with Conceptual Metaphor Theory, distributed cognition, and 4E cognition is specifically welcomed, and teamwork skills are required.

Applications should be sent by email to praca.historia@uw.edu.pl before the deadline of 7 September 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Warsaw). Further project information is available at the project website.
