About this position

KU Leuven is recruiting a PhD candidate in Philosophy for the project Fluidity in the Medieval Aristotle. Readers and Readings of the Greek-Latin Translations (FitMA), funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under Horizon Europe.

The project studies the manuscript transmission of medieval Latin translations of Aristotle and how readers and translators shaped their reception history. The selected PhD researcher will focus on the connection between reader annotations preserved in manuscripts of the translatio vetus of Aristotle’s De anima and the earliest Latin commentary tradition of the 13th century. A key output will be an openly accessible digital edition of these annotations.

The position is embedded in the De Wulf-Mansion Centre for Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy at KU Leuven. The PhD candidate will work as an active member of the FitMA team, participate in meetings, presentations, conferences, and contribute to the project’s broader research activities.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in Philosophy, Arts, or another relevant subject with excellent results; admission to the KU Leuven Institute of Philosophy PhD programme; excellent academic Latin; willingness to develop expertise in medieval philosophy, Latin medieval palaeography, and digital edition methods during the first year.

Funding and conditions: standard KU Leuven PhD employment/fellowship with training opportunities, social and health benefits, office space, and possible remote work within university rules.

Application deadline: 3 November 2026 at 23:59 CET. Preferred starting date: 1 December 2026 or as soon as possible.

Apply via the online application tool and upload an academic CV plus a one-page motivational letter explaining your current skills and the skills you still need to acquire, including your plan for doing so. For questions, contact Pieter Beullens at [email protected].
