About this position

Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is recruiting one Associate Senior Researcher or Researcher for the Center for Biogeochemistry, Department of Materials and Earth Sciences in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan.

This fixed-term, full-time research position is aimed at candidates working in biogeochemistry, organic/inorganic geochemistry, natural product chemistry, isotope chemistry, mass spectrometry, and related interdisciplinary areas. The center focuses on integrated understanding of the Earth, oceans, and life, with particular emphasis on advanced chemical analysis of light elements, organic molecules, organic substances, and metal complex molecules.

The successful candidate will lead one or more research themes such as: biogeochemical processes in ocean and aquatic environments; development of high-resolution mass spectrometry and isotope mass spectrometry at the organic molecule level; evaluation of heterocyclic, organosulfur, and organophosphorus molecule diversity; research on material science and chemical evolution of the natural world; or application of biogeochemical processes to social implementation and new technologies.

Eligibility: a doctoral degree in a relevant field is required. The post is open to researchers who can strengthen JAMSTEC's advanced organic chemical analysis capabilities and contribute to spatiotemporal visualization and prediction of material information in the ocean, Earth, and life. Interviews are generally conducted online, which may be helpful for applicants living overseas or far from Japan.

Funding and conditions: annual income is approximately 7–9 million yen (reference annual salary about 7–9.3 million yen), with bonuses and retirement allowance included in the annual salary system. Commuting allowance and relocation expenses are provided, and company housing for private rental properties may be available subject to criteria.

Deadline: applications must arrive between 2026-09-30 and 2026-11-29. Apply via the official JAMSTEC recruitment page; recommendation letters must be emailed separately to the recruitment contact.
