About this position

CDTnet PhD Fellowship F13 at the University of Bordeaux is a funded doctoral position in progression of atrial fibrillation (AF) substrate and electrophysiology, based in LIRYC – Electrophysiology and Heart Modeling Institute in Bordeaux, France.

The project addresses a key challenge in AF care: despite catheter ablation being an established treatment, many patients experience arrhythmia recurrence and need additional procedures. This PhD will develop methods to better understand how the atrial substrate changes over time and how those changes affect treatment response and recurrence risk.

The doctoral researcher will work on:

- building personalised digital twin models of the atria from cardiac MRI/CT and high-resolution electrical data;
- modelling structural and electrical remodelling using machine learning and longitudinal data;
- predicting response to pulsed field ablation and other AF therapies;
- identifying biomarkers associated with recurrence;
- combining digital twins with clinical follow-up to support personalised rhythm management;
- integrating wearable ECG and remote monitoring data to track disease progression.

The project uses MRI/CT and ECG datasets from AF patients treated at the University of Bordeaux and also draws on data from the UK Biobank and other CDTnet partners. Planned secondments include the University of Oxford (medical image analysis), the University of Zaragoza (ECG processing and signal analysis), Corify in Spain (non-invasive electrophysiological mapping), and the Medtronic Bakken Research Center in the Netherlands (Holter monitoring and advanced electrogram analysis).

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Technology, Physics, or Cardiovascular Science. Useful skills include cardiac electrophysiology, simulation on HPC systems, machine learning, image analysis, and Python. The position also follows MSCA eligibility rules: candidates must not have lived or worked in France for more than 12 months in the 3 years before recruitment, must not already hold a doctoral degree, and must be eligible for the PhD programme at the Université de Bordeaux. Excellent English is required.

Funding: this is a funded PhD fellowship under Horizon Europe / MSCA Marie Curie (Grant Agreement No. 101312147).

Application deadline: 30 September 2026, 23:59 (Europe/Brussels).
