About this position

cfDNA Postdoctoral Fellow / Senior Postdoctoral Fellow in Statistical Genomics at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in the United Kingdom.

This is a full-time postdoctoral opening in the Martin group focused on statistical genomics, cell-free DNA (cfDNA), machine learning, human genetics, and multi-omics. The project aims to develop and apply new statistical and deep learning methods for cfDNA from pregnant women and people, with applications to fetal genomics, placental biology, pregnancy complications, pregnancy loss, fetal growth restriction, and neonatal conditions.

Research directions include calling fetal and maternal genotypes from high-coverage cfDNA sequence data, discovering Mendelian disease genes, and developing biomarkers from methylation-aware whole-genome sequence data. The role also offers collaboration opportunities with researchers at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and the University of Helsinki.

Applicants should have a PhD in statistics, statistical genetics, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, machine learning, or a related area. Strong experience in statistics/statistical genetics, raw sequence data analysis, large-scale human genomic data, Python and/or R, Unix/Linux, reproducible coding, and genomic pipelines/HPC or cloud workflows is expected. Senior-level applicants should also bring prior postdoctoral or equivalent experience, methods development experience in variant calling or phasing/imputation, and evidence of intellectual leadership.

The contract is for 3 years, with salary depending on experience: £38,570-£49,893 per annum for the Postdoctoral Fellow level and £44,305-£49,893 per annum for the Senior Postdoctoral Fellow level.

To apply, submit a CV and cover letter through the online application portal. The closing date is 10 November 2026. Informal queries can be sent to Hilary Martin at [email protected].
