This PhD project at Imperial College London's Department of Materials focuses on developing charge-aware machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) for electrochemical applications. MLIPs have revolutionized materials modeling by offering near-DFT accuracy at a fraction of the computational cost, enabling simulations over larger time and spatial scales. However, current MLIPs are limited in their ability to capture long-range electrostatic interactions, which are crucial for modeling electrochemical reactions at surfaces and interfaces.
The aim of this research is to create an MLIP model that explicitly controls electrochemical potential and charge state, establishing a robust modeling framework for predicting the thermodynamics and kinetics of electrocatalytic surfaces under controlled electrode potential. The project will provide comprehensive training in electrochemistry, atomistic modeling, high-throughput calculations, and machine learning for materials science.
Applicants should have experience with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and machine learning. A background in computational chemistry, physical chemistry, or computational physics is highly desirable. The studentship covers UK home tuition fees, and international students are welcome to apply if they can self-fund the remainder of their tuition. The application deadline is March 31, 2026.
