About this position
The School of Chemistry at the University of St Andrews, in collaboration with industrial partner Johnson Matthey, is advertising 4 fully funded international PhD studentships in a platinum group metals (PGM) cluster. The cluster is focused on materials chemistry and aims to deliver cutting-edge advances in PGM-based materials and compounds, supported by state-of-the-art structural, physical, and microstructural characterisation facilities and links to central facilities.
Research projects available:
1) Palladium Based Electrodes for Hydride Electrochemistry with Professor John TS Irvine ([email protected]). This project focuses on optimizing Pd electrodes, studying structure and formulation, and probing electrochemical performance using impedance spectroscopy alongside microstructure and stability analysis.
2) Thermal Barrier Materials with Dr Jan-Willem Bos ([email protected]). The project develops metal silicide thermal barrier materials and examines the impact of platinum group metals on performance in extreme conditions, including bulk and multilayer materials exploration, stability testing, and extensive characterization.
3) Rhodate and Palladate Quantum Oxides with Dr Alexandra Gibbs ([email protected]). This project develops scalable synthesis methods for novel quantum oxides with future spintronic potential, combining exploratory synthesis, targeted growth, structural characterization, central facilities work (including ISIS Neutron and Muon Source), and physical property investigations.
4) Rhodium For Green Fuel Conversions with Professor John TS Irvine ([email protected]). This project aims to optimize PGM infiltration for CO2 conversions and green fuel conversions (e.g. biogas) as solid oxide electrodes.
Eligibility: Applicants should be highly motivated graduates with a degree in chemistry, physics, or a related discipline. Prior experience in materials research is desirable but not essential, and full training will be provided.
