Diabetes prevention in women with a history of gestational diabetes KU Leuven in Belgium

This PhD position at KU Leuven focuses on diabetes prevention in women with a history of gestational diabetes, as part of the SERENA study—a multicenter, double-blind randomized controlled trial investigating whether the GLP-1 agonist semaglutide (Ozempic) can prevent type 2 diabetes. The project is based in the Endocrinology Department at University Hospitals Leuven, a renowned center for clinical and translational diabetes research. The department boasts a multidisciplinary team including medical staff, research nurses, clinical assistants, diabetes educators, dietitians, and psychologists, and is led by Prof. Katrien Benhalima, an international expert in diabetes and pregnancy.

The SERENA study collaborates with 13 Belgian centers and aims to randomize 252 women with prediabetes to either semaglutide or placebo, with both groups receiving standardized lifestyle advice. Participants will be followed for up to 3.5 years, with biannual study visits alternating between fasting blood tests and oral glucose tolerance tests. The study is powered to assess the prevention of type 2 diabetes and is funded by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO).

As a PhD student, you will be involved in clinical research activities, including administering questionnaires, collecting blood samples, managing databases, and coordinating with other participating centers. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to an individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis on the use of glucose sensors in gestational diabetes. The research group currently includes four doctoral students and offers a supportive, inclusive environment.

Eligibility requires a Master's degree in Medicine (fellow physician), Midwifery, or Biomedical Sciences (clinical specialization preferred), a strong academic record (high honors, >75%, and/or publications), proficiency in Dutch, French, and English, and no prior employment after graduation to maintain fellowship eligibility. The position is a full-time bursary PhD for four years, starting August or September 2026.
