About this position

This PhD project at the University of Surrey's School of Mathematics and Physics focuses on the discovery and validation of quantum materials using superconducting quantum circuits. Quantum materials are at the heart of emerging technologies in quantum computation, sensing, and low-energy electronics, including topological insulators, topological superconductors, spin liquids, and superfluid helium. Their unique properties arise from many-body correlations and subtle forms of order, which are often inaccessible to classical measurement techniques.

Superconducting quantum circuits offer a highly sensitive platform for probing quantum devices, enabling measurements that directly reflect the underlying quantum state. However, a theoretical framework for validating quantum models in devices containing quantum materials is currently lacking. This project aims to bridge that gap by developing new measurement protocols to test the Hamiltonian hypothesis, thereby supporting the materials discovery process and advancing the understanding of quantum systems.

The research will involve theoretical and computational work in quantum mechanics, quantum computing, and solid state physics. Candidates should have a strong interest in quantum science and ideally experience with quantum computing, superconducting circuits modeling, quantum information, or solid state physics. The project is fully funded, with an annual UKRI standard stipend of £21,805 for the 2026/27 academic year, full coverage of tuition fees, and a research training support grant of £4,305.

The position is open to both UK and international candidates, with a start date in October 2026 (later start dates may be possible upon discussion).
