About this position

Doctoral and postdoctoral researcher positions are open in the Cluster of Excellence Microbes for Climate (M4C) at the University of Marburg in Germany, in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology, the University of Münster, and the University of Giessen.

The project investigates how microbes contribute to the carbon cycle and how synthetic biology can be used to develop more efficient ways to sustainably convert CO2. The research is highly interdisciplinary and spans scales from the atomic structure of enzymes to the systems level of the cell.

Openings include 7 doctoral positions (initially 3 years, part-time 65%) and 2 postdoctoral positions (initially 2 years, full-time). Extensions may be possible. The positions start from January 2027.

Research themes include: microbial evolution and the biological carbon cycle; CO2-converting molecular machines in cellular context; and synthetic microbiology for new-to-nature solutions for CO2/CH4 conversion.

Applicants for doctoral positions should hold a completed university degree (Diploma, Master's, or equivalent) in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field. Postdoctoral applicants should hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field. The post also asks for relevant experience, motivation to learn, curiosity, self-motivation, independent working ability, teamwork, and excellent English communication skills.

Funding follows the applicable collective agreements of the host institution (TV-H, TV-L, TVöD-Bund or comparable). The application deadline is 20 August 2026. For project details and required documents, use the official application link.
